Utilities are provided by a number of private and public sector organisations within Northern Ireland. All of these organisation hold some kind of digital mapping of their networks for their own operational purposes. The co-ordination of information relating to utility and netwrok assests is crucial not only within the business itself, but across the various organisations active in this sector, such as: telecoms, electric, water and gas. Benefits from co-ordination include more effective operations, where sharing of information will lead to less damage to overhead lines, underground cables and pipelines; more efficient planning for the provsion of supply to new building sites and developments; and a more co-ordinated approach to street digging and road works avoiding unnecessary disruption to transportation.
Over a two year funding period from March 2004 to March 2006 Mosaic has taken forward a number of pilot projects to help demonstrate the benefits that can be realise from a practical co-ordinated approach to the way geographic information is collected disseminated and used.
The Utilities and Networks group have utilised the infrastructure of the Mosaic Pilots to leverage substantial benefits by sharing their network information online. Data is presented within an online password controlled GIS which includes pdf printing, address searching and querying functionality.
Network information has been provided by the following organisations
-
DRD Water Service
-
Northern Ireland Electricity
-
Phoenix Natural Gas
-
DRD Roads Service
-
NTL
-
DARD Rivers Agency

The project makes data available 24hrs a day, 7 days a week to help the participants improve Health & Safety conditions and drive up efficiencies. The information can be used by Utilities and their Agents to:
