Efficent transportation networks are vital to every day life. The use of geographic information has great potential to improve the way in which these networks are managed to improve the overall transportation system. In July 2002 the government published a Regional Transportation Strategy (RTS) as the key strategy document for transport in Northern Ireland. Geographic information is a key enabler to the effective delivery of an integrated transport strategy. All of the agencies involved in delivering the RTS will need to utilise common data to ensure effective cross-government working on planning, supporting strategies, monitoring their implementation and impact and carrying out post implementation reviews. An integrated geographic information strategy can help achieve this.
The benefits of co-ordinating geographic information in the transport sector extend far beyond improving operations within its key organisations. More effective use of the geographic information that government and private sector bodies hold within the transport sector will lead to improved quality of service provision, better quality of services, better targeting of services to areas of greater social need, the ability to analyse road traffic accident information to improve the quality and safety of the road network and better information provision on transport services and road information. The benefits of an integrated approach to the use of GI in the transport sector help develop cumulative outcomes for the public such as reductions in traffic congestion, reduced environmental pollution and fewer traffic related health problems.
