Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are already employed, or have the potential to be utilised, in a wide range of environmental applications within both the public and private sectors within Northern Ireland. The overall effectiveness of environmental GIS depends on the 'availability' of the various environmental datasets that would be required to enable it to carry out its intended function.

The purpose of this project will be to bring together existing core environmental spatial datasets into a single accessible web based GI repository that will act as an agreed definitive source of major environmental and rural spatial datasets as well as spatial datasets that relate to both the rural and urban environment.

This pilot project will build on existing and planned initiatives in web based GIS systems in the near future. It will link these initiatives together to create a one-stop shop for accessing environmental spatial data in Northern Ireland and allow environmental spatial datasets held by participating organisations to be used by each other internally, if access constraints allow this.

This pilot project will create a shared GI resource providing environmental information to the participating organisations and the wider public using definitive datasets maintained by the dataset creators. This will be accessible via OnlineNI and will be a key delivery method for Northern Ireland for the implementation of the proposed EU INSPIRE Directive.

Project Objectives
• To expand the availability of environment and agriculture datasets (both rural and urban) to increase the capability of the public service to explore issues and encourage better policy making; and
• To help meet the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act by providing a one-stop shop for the environment and agriculture resource for the public.
